04Acrylic Structures

The TransparentStructure, Understood.

Acrylic is where architecture, structural engineering, and water pressure meet. This page explains the material, its behaviour, and the disciplines required to build with it successfully.

01Technical Comparisons

Informed Choices, Side by Side.

Optical clarity
GlassGreen tint at thickness; laminated layers visible
AcrylicHigher light transmission; water-clear at great thickness
Weight
GlassApproximately 2.5x heavier for equivalent panel
AcrylicLighter — significant for lifting and support design
Formability
GlassFlat or limited curvature
AcrylicThermoformable into tunnels and complex curves
Strength behaviour
GlassBrittle; fails suddenly
AcrylicDuctile; deflects visibly before overload
Repair
GlassScratches generally permanent
AcrylicCan be polished and repaired in place
Typical use
GlassSmaller spans, laminated assemblies
AcrylicLarge spans, deep water, curved geometries

02Material and Method

Seventeen Things That Decide Whether It Holds.

Engineering data shown as placeholders is intentionally unverified — project-specific values are inserted only from manufacturer engineering.

Cast acrylic (PMMA) offers exceptional optical clarity, weathering resistance, and the ability to be cast, machined, thermoformed, and bonded into large seamless structures. Engineering data placeholders: density, elastic modulus, allowable stress — to be confirmed per manufacturer.

03Common Questions

Acrylic Pools, Answered Directly.

There is no universal answer — and any supplier who gives one without engineering should be questioned. Thickness is derived per project from water depth, panel span, support conditions, and deflection criteria, including long-term creep allowances. It is calculated by the panel engineer for the specific basin.
