Procuring Acrylic Panels: The Questions That Matter

Large cast acrylic panels are produced by a small number of specialist manufacturers worldwide. All of them can show you impressive reference projects. The differences that matter are harder to see in a brochure.

Ask about block casting versus cell casting for your panel size, and why. Ask how bonds are made, how they are annealed, and how bond strength is verified. Ask for the deflection criteria used in their engineering — not just the thickness they propose, but the allowable deflection behind it, because long-term creep behaviour depends on it. Ask what happens if a panel is damaged in transit: what is the realistic remake time, and what does that do to your programme?

Ask who actually performs the site bonding, and under what environmental controls. A factory-perfect panel can be compromised by a site bond made in dust, humidity, or haste.

None of these questions are adversarial. Good manufacturers welcome them, because they have good answers. The answers — and the confidence and specificity with which they are given — tell you far more than a price comparison ever will.
